The Indexing Strategy
01
Seed Your Metadata
Amazon's A9 algorithm uses your "7 Keywords" to decide which categories you're eligible for. Match your keywords to the "Pills" in the explorer above.
02
Manual Request
KDP only allows 3 categories at setup. Once live, use the "Contact Us" portal to request placement in the more specific sub-niches found here.
03
Monitor Rank
If you aren't hitting the Top 100 in a niche within 7 days, your "Strength Score" is too low. Pivot to a less competitive sub-category.
Category Intelligence FAQ
What is a "Ghost Category"?
These are highly specific niches (like Kindle eBooks > Romance > Gothic) that aren't always visible in the main dashboard but can be targeted via specific keyword strings in your metadata.
How often should I change my categories?
We recommend auditing your categories every 90 days. If a category becomes too "saturated" (Top 10 books have 50,000+ reviews), it’s time to find a more specialized niche.
Can I be in both Fiction and Non-Fiction?
Technically yes, but it confuses the algorithm's "Also Bought" recommendations. Stick to the primary intent of your book to keep your conversion data clean.
